Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
ABOUT THE SITE
Inaugurated in 1991, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is dedicated to the advancement of learning and scholarship, with special emphasis on research, postgraduate education and close collaboration with business and industry. The university occupies an impressive 60-hectare site on the northern end of Clearwater Bay Peninsula at Tai Po Tsai. Situated on the slopes along the shore, the campus grounds are terraced to afford buildings on all levels unobstructed panoramic views of the sea. Here you will find the latest technology in all facilities and a unique environment for educational and research activities.
ARRIVAL AND CHECK-IN
The GRC conference office is located in Room 2612A (Lifts 31/32) Chia-Wei Woo Academic Concourse. Check-in on Sunday will be outside the Chiang Chen Lecture Theater.
If you are arriving after 10:00 pm on Sunday, you will need to contact the site beforehand to make arrangements.
THE MEETING ROOM AND POSTER AREA
Conference sessions are held in the Chiang Chen Lecture Theater (LT-J) along the Chia-Wei Woo Academic Concourse.
Poster sessions are held in the Exposition Hall, Hong Kong Jockey Club Atrium.
ON-SITE HOUSING / FACILITIES
Conferees are housed in dormitories on campus (Senior Staff Quarter, Tower 1 - 5, University Center, Tower C or Visitor Center, Tower 2). Conferees must check in for lodging at the main entrance of the dormitory after checking in at the Gordon Research Conference office on campus. Most housing is suite style (apartments) with several sleeping rooms, a shared living area and bathroom.
DINING AREA / MEALS
All GRC meals are held at HKUST. Breakfast is served in the University Center, Tower C, UC Bistro located on the ground floor. Lunch & dinner will take place in the China Garden Restaurant (G/F Restaurant), Hong Kong Jockey Club Atrium.
Kosher meals and Halal meals are not available.
INTERNET, PHONE AND COMPUTER ACCESS
Internet access is generally available throughout the campus. Participants may check their e-mail accounts using Telnet at many Computer Express Stations located throughout the campus.
Wireless internet service is also available. Conferees who wish to use this service should have a laptop with a wireless card that is 802.11b or 802.11g compatible. A login password is required. Please check with the Conference Office for login information.
Local (land-line) calls are free. Local calls from public coin phones cost HK$1 per five minutes. International Direct Dialing (IDD) service is available in the Conference Office, but an extra fee may be charged. Stored-value phone cards (available at most conveniences stores) allow you to make calls on (IDD) public coin and card phones.
Mobile phone users: the GSM, PCS, CDMA and TDMA networks are available in Hong Kong.
HANDICAPPED ACCESSIBILITY
All spaces used for the Gordon Research meeting are handicapped accessible.
OTHER INFORMATION
Entry Regulations:
Visitors to Hong Kong must hold a valid passport. Passports should be valid for at least six months after your planned departure date from Hong Kong. Nationals of most countries are not required to obtain visas for periods varying from seven days to six months, depending on nationality. For instance, visitors from Europe and North America are not required to obtain visas for up to a period of 3 months (6 months for British citizens). Check the
Hong Kong Immigration Department Visa and Entry Requirements to find out if you need a visa or Entry Permit, and how long you can stay in Hong Kong.

Weather:
Hong Kong enjoys a generally sub-tropical climate. June is hot and humid. Temperature ranges from 26°C to 33°C (78°F to 91°F). Humidity can rise above 86%. The
Hong Kong Observatory provides a useful 7 day forecast.
Recommended dress: Short sleeves and cotton or linen clothes are best. A light sweater or jacket for indoor use is a must as the air-conditioning tends to be very cold. An umbrella for the occasional shower is advisable. A hat for outdoor activities to protect against the sun is highly recommended.
Voltage:
Electricity main supply voltages is 220 volts/frequency 50 Hz AC. Three-rectangular pin plugs are the norm. Foreign appliances may require an adapter.
