The GRC on Antimicrobial Peptides was initiated in 1997 and has since been held as a bi-annual conference, alternating between US and European sites, to facilitate attendance by the large international community of scientists active in this research field. Antimicrobial peptides are a family of host-defense peptides, most of which are gene-encoded and produced by living organisms of all types. They are membrane-active molecules that disrupt cellular membranes of living organisms. Antimicrobial peptides have been extensively studied for more than two decades for their various roles in the defense against microbes, and their potential application as new antibiotics with new modes of actions. In addition, the study of the regulation of antimicrobial peptide synthesis in model bacteria, plants, invertebrates and mammals has provided a unique window on innate immunity, attracting many scientists interested in this burgeoning area. Speakers have always been chosen to give a broad, up-to-date overview of this rapidly evolving and multi-disciplinary field, as well as covering emerging discoveries in the function, regulation and roles of antimicrobial peptides. Potential medical applications of antimicrobial peptides as innovative anti-infective agents to combat pathogenic microorganisms in plants, animals and humans have been discussed by scientists from both academic and clinical institutions, as well as by representatives from the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. The consistent aim of the GRC on Antimicrobial Peptides has been to bring together an outstanding and diverse group of scientists at the forefront of this multidisciplinary field and to stimulate interesting discussions and productive interactions for future research and applications.
