Frequently Asked Questions:

Grant Proposals
Does GRC submit the federal grant proposal for me?
Yes, all federal grant proposals must be submitted through the GRC office. Once you have completed your proposal, your Grants Coordinator will review it and submit it to the appropriate agency.
When does GRC need to receive the grant proposal?
GRC must receive your completed proposal 4 weeks before the agency deadline for review and processing.
Do I have to contact the Agency first?
Yes, most, if not all federal agencies require contact prior to submitting a proposal. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), for example, requires that you get an Acceptance Letter from an approved person at the Institute that you want to submit your proposal to. A grant proposal cannot be submitted without this letter.
How can I find out what the submission deadline for a federal agency is?
Links to the websites of the various federal agencies can be found in the Grants & Contributions section of our web site. You should always confirm a deadline with your contact at the agency.
Where can I find the required forms?
Links to forms for various agencies can be found in the Grants & Contributions section of our web site.
I am not a U.S. citizen - can I still submit a federal grant proposal for my conference?
Typically when a Chair is not a U.S. citizen, the Vice Chair will often act as the Principal Investigator (PI) and the proposal can be submitted in his/her name.
What are the NIH deadlines?
Currently, there are 3 cycles for submission - April 12, August 12 and December 12.
Do I have to get permission from NIH to submit a proposal?
Yes, NIH requires that you get an Acceptance Letter from the Institute that will review your proposal. It is recommended that you contact the Institute well in advance of the deadline for submission. More information and a list of appropriate contacts at NIH is available on the NIH website.
Are NIH proposals submitted electronically?
Yes, NIH now requires the electronic submission of all proposals via Grants.gov. Please contact Holly Tobin (htobin@grc.org) or your Grants Coordinator for more instructions and the forms.
