Gordon Research Seminars

The Gordon Research Seminar Program (GRS) is a series of highly successful and unique opportunities for young researchers to share in the GRC experience. Each seminar is held in conjunction with a related GRC and begins the weekend immediately prior to the GRC. Graduate students, post docs, and other scientists with comparable levels of experience and education come together to discuss their current research and build informal networks with their peers that may lead to a lifetime of collaboration and scientific achievement. The 2-day Gordon Research Seminars are organized by young investigators with the support of leading scientists from the associated GRC. The majority, if not all, of the GRS participants are expected to participate in the following GRC.

The Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology & Science at NC State University provides seed money to a limited number of new Gordon Research Seminars each year. Together with the Kenan Institute, GRC is very excited to invite young scientists to take part in this unique opportunity.

GRS Application Guidelines (version 2011):

  • In August 2009, GRC will invite proposals for 2011 Gordon Research Seminars. All new Gordon Research Seminars as well as those that have been held in the past must submit a proposal to organize a GRS in 2011.
  • GRC's Board of Trustees will review the proposals for 2011 Gordon Research Seminars during the Board meeting in October 2009 after reviewing evaluation data from the 2009 Gordon Research Conferences.
  • GRS selection is a competitive, merit-based process, and preference will be given to meetings in good standing. GRC-Sponsored Meetings and GRCs on probation, notice, or attendance watch are normally ineligible.
  • Seed funding, provided by the Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology & Science at NC State University, will be offered to a limited number of first-time meetings.
  • All other Gordon Research Seminars are expected to be self-supporting. Many GRSs have been highly successful in acquiring federal and private funding through joint proposals with the related GRC.
  • Carryover funds from the GRC's Conference Budget may be transferred to the GRS. All transferred funds must be expended by the GRS and cannot be returned to the GRC Conference Budget.
  • All new GRS (with the exception of the GRS in Bioinorganic Chemistry) will have a uniform, pre-GRC format:

    * Gordon Research Seminars held at international sites follow a slightly revised schedule
  • The Gordon Research Seminar should attract a target audience of 50 attendees.
  • All Gordon Research Conferences (GRC) associated with a Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) will have their own separate application process and Registration Fee.
  • Some GRC conference sites may be unable to accommodate a GRS. All Gordon Research Seminars approved for scheduling will be contacted regarding an appropriate and suitable location for scheduling both the GRC and the GRS in 2011.
  • Please check back for more information regarding 2011 GRS Program Guidelines and Application Form.
